Teacher Moment Tuesday~Don't Waste Your Summer

Hey Glamour Girls! Some of you have children and some don't, for those of  you who  don't share this with someone who does.
This summer I want you help increase the reading level of a child! You can do this by encouraging children to read, taking them to the library, and explaining to child how important it is.

For my son we will have weekly spelling tests for the month of June. Every word spelled correctly adds one dollar to his bank account. In July he will have the option to spend or save the money.

I think it's important for parents and family members to have a helping hand in raising a child. This requires no money! You don't have to give the child money for reading and spelling, that's something I'm doing new this year. My son is going to 4th grade so I thought it would be nice to see how this works.

I hope you consider taking time to help a child learn to read or love to read!

Teacher Moment Tuesday- Diversity

Hey Glamour Girls! It’s Tuesday so of course I would like to share something educational. This morning I was reading the USA Today newspaper and came across an article about President Obama and his cabinet. If you girls don’t know President Obama has been criticized for his cabinet picks, some feels as if he does not have enough diversity in his cabinet.

Monday April 29, 2013 President Obama nominated Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx to be the next Transportation secretary.  This nomination could help dull persistent criticism over the racial diversity of his cabinet.  Mayor Foxx is the second African American mayor in Charlotte’s history. He’s 42 years old and has made big changes in Charlotte since becoming major; he’s looked to as a young political star.

If Foxx is confirmed by the Senate he will become the third African American to serve in President Obama’s second-term cabinet, joining two others Attorney General Eric Holder and United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice.

President Obama has boasted of his White House’s diversity and urged critics not to judge the Cabinet’s makeup until he finished his picks. He still needs to choose a Commerce secretary and U.S. Trade Representative. In announcing the nomination President Obama focused on Foxx’s accomplishments and upbringing not his race.  I think this shows that the President is more focused on getting the job done, than the race of the person he picks.

I wish Foxx the best, and I hope people can stop criticizing the President so much about this cabinet picks.

Teacher Moment Tuesday- On Time Graduation at University of Central Missouri

Hello it’s teacher moment Tuesday! How many of us attended undergrad for more than 4 years? I did! I don’t feel ashamed about it; one school may have the plan to solve this problem. Reading the St. Louis Post Dispatch I came across an article about the University of Central Missouri. The school has launched an initiative designed to help more students earn degrees in four years.

Starting in the fall of 2013 the school will require most incoming freshman to live in residence halls for two years, encouraging students to pick majors earlier and offer better academic advising. The school will also be offering a scholarship called “15 to Finish” for seniors who've taken full class loads their first three years.  The student body is about 11,800. 500 students out of about a typical 1,800 student freshman class don’t graduate in five years.

The school is still working out the details, but the two year requirement will most likely affect traditional full time students. The idea behind the “15 to Finish” scholarship is that students will take advantage of 15 credit hours per semester, to save money and graduate in four years. The exact amount of the scholarship won’t be determined till later this spring.

Universities and colleges believe that if students are engaged in their education and campus organizations they will more likely stay in school and graduate. I believe this to a certain extent but the student must want to success just as bad. I thought this was great to share today because so many high school students are deciding what school they want to attend this fall. If you know someone who is considering attending the University of Central Missouri feel free to share this information with them.
